 大分県南西部山間、竹田市や豊後大野市は、日本書紀や豊後国風土記に、土蜘蛛にまつわる伝承が数多く記されている地である。竹田市久住町の宮処野神社（みやこのじんじゃ）は、景行天皇が土蜘蛛征伐にあたり陣を構えた地とされる。そこから南に行軍したところ、土蜘蛛の抵抗に遭い、一旦退却した地が、同じ竹田市の城原八幡社（きばるはちまんしゃ）、その南西、やはり同じ市内の、阿蘇外輪山の麓の禰疑野神社（ねぎのじんじゃ）が、三人の精強な土蜘蛛、ウチサル、ヤタ、クニマロの本拠地で、三人はここで天皇に討たれたという。また、豊後大野市の知田（ちだ）は、アオ、シロという二人の土蜘蛛を討ち、血が大量に流れたので「血田」と呼ばれたのが地名の起源という。一方、豊後大野市には、景行天皇を食事でもてなした、シノカオキ、シノカオミという土蜘蛛の伝承もある。なぜ、この地域にはこんなにも土蜘蛛の伝承が多いのか。そのヒントは、山を越えた、熊本県側にあった。肥前国風土記は、禰疑野の土蜘蛛と同じウチサルという名の土蜘蛛が、熊本市近郊の山にいたと伝え、それを討ったのが、市内の健軍神社の祭神・タケオクミノミコトという。この二つのウチサル伝承地の中央には、阿蘇山が聳える。そこは、神代より戦国を経て今まで続く、阿蘇氏の治める地であった。九州土蜘蛛伝承の真相に迫る。(C)高橋御山人2015 Travel Writing & Commentary
