 新潟県北東、佐渡よりもさらに北の海に浮かぶ粟島。一島一村の粟島浦村に帰属し、独自に発電所も所有する。佐渡と同じく、西海岸は日本海の荒波に削られ、断崖絶壁の奇観を成し、初夏には岩ゆりで彩られる。歴史も古く、縄文遺跡が残り、万葉集には粟島を詠んだ歌が残っている。東海岸、島の中心集落・内浦の八所神社は、島の総鎮守と言えるが、その祭神は古代から天皇の守護神として宮中で祀られて来た「宮中八神」であり、歴史の古さの窺わせる。伝承によれば、最初に島に住んでいたのは蝦夷であった。9世紀初め頃には北部九州から松浦家がやって来て、内浦にて共存したという。やがて越前より本保家が渡って来ると、蝦夷と松浦家は西海岸に追いやられた。その後蝦夷は滅亡する。それから様々な変遷を経て、政治面を担う本保家、財政面を担う脇川家、学問面を担う神丸家と、各氏族が役割分担して島を統治して来た。このように、一つの島にあって、様々な氏族があるいは争い、あるいは共存して興亡する様は、一国の歴史を見るようでもある。本土と隔絶した自然が、こうした独自の歴史と文化を育んで来たのだ。常識をはるかに超越したゆるキャラ「泡姫ちゃん」など、現代の粟島にも、その独自性、独立性を見る事が出来る。離島というメインストリームに「まつろわぬ」存在を考察する。(C)高橋御山人2016 Travel Writing & Commentary
