 長野県南西部の阿智村は、高橋御山人の祖母の出身地であり、先祖代々当地に住んで来た。旧姓を園原というが、阿智村の西端、岐阜県との境である神坂峠付近に、園原という地名があり、ここが園原氏発祥の地だという。神坂峠は、古代から中世の幹線道路・東山道最大の難所に当たり、日本武尊が山の神の化身である白鹿を討った神話がある。日本武尊の腰掛石とも、古代祭祀の磐座ともされる巨石が、神坂神社境内にある。神坂神社は園原の里の最奥、神坂峠の手前にあり、境内を東山道が通っている。祭神は山中にあって海神の住吉三神で、古代に信濃の安曇野に移住した海洋氏族・阿曇氏との関係が窺われる（本シリーズ其之弐拾参参照）。一方、社殿手前両脇には御柱も立っており、諏訪文化圏である事も明らかである。東山道最大の難所であっただけに、都の人々にも古くから知られ、当地に聳える巨木「帚木」は、源氏物語の巻名にもなっている。園原氏の祖先は、ここに屋敷を構えた長者・炭焼藤太といい、宮廷貴族在原氏の娘・客女姫との婚姻や、その間に生まれた金売吉次の伝説がある。金売吉次は、平家物語等に登場する黄金商人で、源義経を奥州平泉へ案内したとされ、当地にも「義経駒繋ぎの桜」が残る。古のエネルギー資源を生産し、巨万の富を築いたという、高橋御山人の遠い祖先の物語を追う。(C)高橋御山人2016 Travel Writing & Commentary
