 京の出入口「京の七口」の一つとして、古くから知られた粟田口。京都盆地東端のこの地は、古代、五代孝昭天皇の子孫・粟田氏が鉱物採取や粟、瓜の生産を行ったという。平安時代には、清和天皇の勅により、祇園の八坂神社の疫病鎮めの神・牛頭天皇を祀る社が建立された。八坂神社は感神院とも呼ばれた為、こちらは感神院新宮と呼ばれたが、これが現在の粟田神社である。鉱物資源に恵まれていた為か、粟田口近辺には、古より刀工が数多く住んでいた。その中でも代表的なのが、平安時代の三条小鍛冶宗近と、鎌倉時代の粟田口藤四郎吉光で、古代からの製鉄の神・天目一箇神とともに、境内の末社・鍛冶神社の祭神となっている。特に、三条小鍛冶宗近は伝説的な存在で、一条天皇の宝刀「小狐丸」は、稲荷明神が化身した童子が合槌を打って完成したといい、その稲荷の神は、粟田神社境内摂社の北向稲荷神社や、粟田神社と三条通を挟んだ向かいに建つ合槌稲荷神社に鎮まるという。この伝説は、謡曲「小鍛冶」の題材となっていて、能や神楽、歌舞伎等の伝統芸能を通じ広く知られて来たが、近年、名刀を美男子として擬人化した「刀剣乱舞」でも取り上げられ、若い女性にも三条小鍛冶宗近の名が知られるようになった。今も昔も、「刀剣に神が宿る」地、粟田。ここに伝統文化とサブカルチャーの交錯を見る。(C)高橋御山人2016 Travel Writing & Commentary
