 朝廷には、かつて「斎王」という制度があった。天皇の即位に伴い、その在位中、未婚の皇族女性が最高位の巫女として、伊勢の神宮に仕えるものである。起源は、朝廷黎明期、宮中より天照大神を遷し、皇女・倭姫命が遍歴の末に伊勢に祀ったという神宮の創建伝承にあるが、歴史的に確実に遡れるのは、天武天皇の治世である。最盛期は平安時代だが、平安後期には衰退し始め、後醍醐天皇の治世を最後に断絶した。斎王は、年数回の祭典の他は、神宮の十数キロ北西に居住し、その御所は斎宮と呼ばれた。遺構は現在の三重県明和町で発見されていて、非常に広大である。その核心たる斎王の御座所のあった内院は、現在、竹神社が鎮座するあたりにあった。当神社は神宮鎮座以前から当地にあった豪族の祖神を祀り、子孫は竹連といい、斎宮は「竹の都」とも呼ばれた。斎王は、当然ながら身を清浄に保つ事が重視されたが、かといって常に厳格な暮らしをしていた訳でもない。斎宮は文学サロンとして賑わっていたし、当時の文学作品にも登場する。「伊勢物語」に至っては、在原業平と斎王のスキャンダルが仄めかされている。腐敗した斎宮頭を「神託」を通じ糾弾したせん子女王のような斎王もおり、詳細に見れば見る程、現代的な「巫女」のイメージとは異なる存在である事が分かる。古代の朝廷における神道祭祀の核心を探る。(C)高橋御山人2016 Travel Writing & Commentary
