 名古屋の高橋御山人の実家近くに、物部神社が鎮座する。神武天皇の時代、当地のまつろわぬ民を討って、大石を鎮めとし、それを御神体とするということだが、それは討ったまつろわぬ民の怨霊を封じた「重石」ということになる。実際、この大石は、別名を鎮撫石という。鎮撫とは、反乱を鎮める意。要石、根石の別名もあるが、これもまた「まつろわぬ民」封じの感がある。要石とは大地を鎮め地震を防ぐ呪術的な意味の石であるが、有名なものは鹿島神宮と香取神宮のものである。それらは、地表に出ている部分はわずかであるが、深く樹木が地中に根を張るように伸びていると伝わる。これらにも地震鎮めの意はあるが、両神宮の祭神は、天孫降臨に先立ち国津神を平定した武神であり、朝廷黎明期の勢力圏の端にあって、両神宮には北の蝦夷に睨みを利かす意味がある。また、鹿島の神は中臣氏の氏神であり、古代には神事を司る氏族としてより上位の、物部氏の包括下にあったという。香取の神は、物部氏が石上神宮にて直接祭祀を行っている神である。物部氏は軍事をもってまつろわぬ民を平らげ、神事をもってその怨念を鎮め、支配地の人心を鎮めた。そして石によって死者を鎮めるという祭祀には、地下に暗い死者の国があるという、古代の死生観が根底にあった。石を通じ、日本人の原初の死生観に迫る。(C)高橋御山人2016 Travel Writing & Commentary
