 秋田県にある「秋田三湖」と呼ばれる三つの湖。その全てに龍の伝説が伝わっている。まずは、田沢湖の「辰子姫」。このあたりに住んでいた人間の娘・辰子は、永遠の美を求めて観音菩薩に願を掛け、お告げにより山中の泉の水を飲んだ。しかし喉が渇いて際限なく水を飲み続け、龍の姿に変ってしまった。そこで仕方なく泉を広げて湖とし、そこに住んだ。これが田沢湖だという。湖畔のその泉の近くには、辰子姫を祭る御座石神社が建っている。青森との県境にある十和田湖にも、近くに住んでいたマタギの若者「八郎太郎」が、掟を破って仲間のイワナまで食べてしまい、川の水を飲み続けて龍となり、十和田湖を作って住んだという伝説がある。そこに、熊野で修業を積んだ山伏「南祖坊（なんそのぼう）」が現れる。南祖坊は「草鞋が切れた場所が終の棲家となる」という神託とともに鉄の草鞋を授かり、その切れた場所が十和田湖だった。南祖坊はここで龍に化身して八郎太郎と戦い、勝利する。これが十和田神社に祭られる青龍権現である。敗れた八郎太郎は西へ逃れて湖を作って住む。これが八郎潟であり、湖岸の八郎神社に祭られている。その八郎潟を戦後干拓して作ったのが大潟村で、入植した村民により建てられた大潟神社にも、八郎太郎は祭られている。古の龍伝説を辿り、明日にまで展望を広げた未来志向対談。(C)高橋御山人2016 Travel Writing & Commentary
