 「犬神」で知られる四国だが、「猫神」を祭る神社もある。徳島県阿南市の「お松大権現」もその一つ。江戸時代、当地の庄屋・惣兵衛が、近在の富豪・野上三左衛門から金を借り、不作で困窮する村を救った。その後借金は返済するが、証文を取りそびれたまま惣兵衛は病死する。惣兵衛の妻・お松は、何度も証文を請求するが受け取れず、逆に未返済だと偽られ、担保の土地も取られてしまう。お松は奉行所に訴え出るが、奉行も富豪に買収され、下された裁きは不当だった。意を決したお松は、藩主に直訴、その罪により処刑される。残された愛猫・三毛は、化け猫となって三左衛門と奉行の家に現れ、両家は断絶、仇を討った。そのお松を村人が祀ったのが「お松大権現」だという。仇討ちの成功譚から、勝負や受験の神として信仰され、境内には夥しい招き猫が奉納されている。また、高知県南西部、足摺岬近くにも関わらず、全く海に接していない内陸の三原村には「猫神様」が祀られている。戦国時代、土佐南西部を治めた一条氏の姫君・椿姫の屋敷が当地にあったが、姫が何者かにさらわれ、姫の乳母や飼い猫も姫を探したが見つからず、乳母は滝に身を投げて自殺、猫も何も食べず衰えて死んだので、里人達が祠を造って祀ったという。猫神様は喘息や胸の病に霊験があると言われる。四国山間の「猫神信仰」を考察する。(C)高橋御山人2016 Travel Writing & Commentary
