 福島県南部の棚倉町に建つ都々古別神社は、陸奥国一宮。棚倉には、馬場、八槻の二ヶ所に都々古別神社があるが、どちらも奥州一宮である。奥州では、はるか北に位置する宮城県塩竈市の鹽竈神社も一宮であるが、これは時代による朝廷勢力圏変遷の影響で、当地はより古い時代の中心地であったと思われる。それを窺わせるのが、近隣の建鉾山で、古代の祭祀遺跡が発見されているが、この建鉾山こそが両都々古別神社創建の地であり、日本武尊による東征の際、ここに鉾を立てて神を祀ったとされる。陸奥国風土記逸文には、その時の様子が詳しく記されており、太古、この地には八人の首長に率いられた土蜘蛛がいたという。そのうち二人は姫の名を持つ女性であった。この土蜘蛛は強大で、朝廷側の国造を敗走させる。そこで、日本武尊が官軍とともに征伐に来るのだが、土蜘蛛は津軽の蝦夷と共謀し、砦に多数の弓を連ね張って、官軍は手を焼く。しかし日本武尊が放った八発の矢は、見事八人の首長を射抜き、それらは全て根付いて芽が生え、槻の木になった。そこでその地を八槻と呼んだという。また、八人のうち「神」の名を冠す二人は許されて（うち一人が女性）、子孫が当地に住むと書かれている。その棚倉で、御山人は偶然にも「サンカ」が営む店を発見！「今」を生きる人々にとっての古の「物語」の意味を考える。(C)高橋御山人2016 Travel Writing & Commentary
