 霞ヶ浦と北浦に挟まれた、茨城県南部の行方市。古より行方郡と呼ばれ、常陸国風土記にも、沢山の物語が掲載されている地である。その一つに「夜刀神」の物語がある。継体天皇の時代、箭括氏麻多智（やはずのうじまたち）が、谷あいの土地を開墾し田としようとしたところ、頭に角のある蛇「夜刀神（やとのかみ）」が沢山現れ、妨害した。そこで麻多智は夜刀神を打ち殺して追い払った。そして山と田との境界の堀に杖を立て、山を夜刀神の土地、田を人の土地とすることを宣言し、麻多智が子々孫々神として祭ることとした。さらに、孝徳天皇の時代、壬生連麿（みぶのむらじまろ）が、この谷の池に堤を築こうとした時には、池のほとりの椎の木の上に夜刀神が群がって登り、去ろうとしなかったので、壬生連麿が工事で使役していた人々に打ち殺すよう命ずると、逃げ隠れた。このような話が書かれている。麻多智が神を祭った場所は、行方市玉造の愛宕神社と言われており、その手前に湧く泉が、壬生連麿が堤を築こうとした「椎井の池」だという。謎多き夜刀神の伝承であるが、同じ風土記の行方郡の記事には、数多くの「まつろわぬ民」が登場し、彼らとの関係が窺われる。また、彼らを討つ日本武尊の記述も多いが、風土記では日本武尊を「天皇」としている。物語に託された古の人々の魂を読み解く。(C)高橋御山人2016 Travel Writing & Commentary
