市川清一は太平洋戦争末期のある日を回想していた。
彼は会社から自宅へ帰るところだった。襲い来るB29の空襲を受けながら、恐怖と共に燃えさかる焼夷弾に美しさすら感じていた。
そんな中、ある小さな防空壕へ飛び込んだ。暗がりを懐中電灯で奥を照らすと、女がいた。清一はそばに来た女と話しながら、水をもらったりした。女は驚くほどに美しい女だった。
清一は空襲の中、女と壕の中で激しく愛し合った。
だが、翌朝になると女の姿は消えていた。夢だったのだろうか。
女になんとしても再び会いたいと願った彼は、その日同じ防空壕に隠れていたらしい、50歳過ぎの宮園とみという老婆に出会うが、「そんな女は知らない」と言われる。
あの女は幻だったのか……。結局清一は女の正体を知ることは無かった。
