実は、定次郎は芸者であったおはんと一緒になったことで勘当されていたが、おはんには自分が越前屋の一族であることも隠していた。
兄に今の住処が突き止められたことで、引っ越しをしようと言いだす定次郎だったが、真実を知ったおはんは猛反対するが、定次郎は聞き入れない。
だが、とうとう家を訪れた佐太郎と顔を合わせる羽目になった定次郎は、定次郎が家を出た後の母親のことを聞かされる。母親は一日たりとも泣かない日は無かった。定次郎が家を出てからというもの、放蕩も、過ぎた酒も辞めて真面目に働いていると聞いて、母親をはじめとして皆が定次郎の帰りを待っている……だが、それでも帰ればおはんと別れることになると、定次郎は首を縦に振らない。
それを見かねたおはんは、自分と別れて家に帰るよう言い出すが……。
