能登守には帯刀という世子がおり、その下にも男子が五人もいたが、それが次々と死去し、五年前から一人も跡目を継ぐ者がいなくなっていた。そこで去年の春辺りから嗣子選定の問題が起こり、初めて又三郎の身分が表面に浮かび上がったのだ。又三郎は自分が藩主の庶子だと聞いてもさほど驚きもしなかったが、その事実が知れると同時に彼の身辺はたちまち虚構と偽善と阿諛で塗り固められ、彼を中心にして家臣の間に対立と暗闘が始まった。自分の意志のないところで、勝手に争いが繰り広げられることは、たとえようもなく彼を虚無的にしてしまった。
目を気にして蔦萬にも通えずにいる雨の中、どこへ行こうかと立ち止まった又三郎の足が向かわせたのはお紋の家であった……。
