小さな子どもを持つ親の多くは、サンタクロースを演じます。子どもには気づかれないように、しかし子どもが欲しがるプレゼントを枕元に置くサンタクロースというのは、ある意味で「贈与」の理想のように感じます。 サンタクロースの存在をいつまで信じていたのかという問いの答えは人によってさまざまで、僕が訊いた中では「20歳すぎまで信じていた」という人もいましたし、「小学校低学年でわかった」という人もいました。 ただ、共通するのは、あるクリスマスの日に一挙にわかったのではなく、何年かかけてしだいにわかってきたということです。 実際にお父さんが枕元でごそごそやっているのを子どもは視認することもよくあるわけですけれど、そういう場合には、「お父さんは夢遊病状態にあり、サンタさんが憑依(ひょ うい)して、その贈与行為を代行しているのである」という説明を子どもたち自身が（しばしば自主的に）採用して、その事態を合理化しているようです。 子どもを持つ何人かからの聞き取りではおおむねそうでした。（本文より） 内田樹＆平川克美「大人の条件」はこちらから→http://yakan-hiko.com/uchida.html
