谷口はかつて先輩の杉山の妹・早苗を愛していたが、彼女は別の男性と結婚してしまった。早苗は谷口が初めて愛した女性だった。その別れから酒と遊蕩に溺れ、六年の歳月が経ってから、谷口は今の妻と結婚し、あくる年に子が生まれてからは早苗のことも忘れていた。
夏になってからのある日のこと、谷口は久しぶりに杉山から電話をもらい、代々木にある彼の家を訪れることになった。そこで谷口は期せずして、早苗との再会を果たす。久々の再会は谷口の心を揺さぶるのに十分すぎるものであった。
帰りに早苗を送っていく途中で、彼女は別れた日に谷口から贈られたリラの苗の話をした。
――あなたからいただいたリラ、あれっきりまだ咲きませんのよ。
二人は再会を約束して別れた。谷口の胸には熱い想いがこみ上げるのだが……。
