本書はC.G.ユングの『自我と無意識との諸関係』の全訳である。あえて『自我と無意識』と題したのは、原題の直訳が日本語としては硬すぎ、その点でむしろ内容にふさわしくないと考えたからである。実際本書は、ユングが多年にわたる経験から得た所見を、できるだけ平易に、なんの予備知識も持たない読者に解き明かそうと努めたものであって、ペルソナ、アニマ、アニムス、自己といったユング心理学の基礎概念について、これほど丹念な説明を加えた自著は他にほとんどないといってよい。本書はユング心理学の入門書として読んでも十分読めるのである。
