多賀郡の大津の浦の郷士の娘きぬは、この様を見てじっとしておれず、裁縫稽古所へ集まる娘たち三十人ばかりを誘って、竹槍の稽古を始めていた。
だが、そんな中、一人どうしても一緒に稽古をしようとしない貞子が許せず、もう稽古に来ないよう言い放った。
貞子は一年ほど前にこの土地に移ってきた一家の者であった。貞子の家には病床の母と幼い弟がおり、父は水戸家に仕える武士であったが不興を買って追放された後に切腹したため、貞子が暮らしを支えていた。どうにか仕立ての仕事で暮らしを成り立たせていた。 五月二十八日の昼頃、大津の沖に突然二艘の異国船が現れ、町が騒然とする中、きぬが貞子の家を訪れる……。
