檀家も参詣人も少ない貧乏な破寺に、半年前から一人の僧が住んでいる。名は自念和尚。網代笠を深くかぶり、誰も顔を見た者がいない。そのうえばくちを打つし、身のこなしに隙がない。ある日、定吉という傷ついた若者を助ける。わけを聞くと、兄の吉之助がやくざの甚八に殺され、その仇打ちに協力してくれた兄の友・辰次郎までもが命を落としたという。こうなると黙っていられない自念和尚。数珠を竹槍に持ちかえ、やくざとの戦いに受けて立つ。
山本周五郎（やまもと・しゅうごろ）
1903～67年。小説家。山梨の生まれ。本名・清水三十六(さとむ)。名は生まれ年からつけられ、筆名は東京で徒弟として住み込んだ質屋「山本周五郎商店」にちなんだ。20代前半に作家活動を始め、39歳の時『日本婦道記』が直木賞に推されたが受賞辞退。その後も多くの賞を固辞する。江戸の庶民を描いた人情ものから歴史長編まで作品は数多い。代表作には、「樅(もみ)ノ木は残った」「赤ひげ診療譚」「おさん」「青べか物語」「さぶ」などがある。1987年9月には、「山本周五郎賞」が新潮文芸振興会により設定された。
