＜第十回＞
広瀬淡窓（1728~1856）は江戸時代後期の儒者で、大教育家でした。豊後（ぶんご＝大分県）日田（ひた）の人。家は諸藩御用達（ごようたし）の商家でしたが、読書・学問の気風に富んでいました。古文辞派の亀井南冥・昭陽父子に学び、20代半ばから家塾を開設、この塾が発展して咸宜園（かんぎえん）となります。
病弱のため、郷里にとどまって教育に専念し、教歴50年、門生は全国から4600人以上が集まりました。高野長英、大村益次郎、田口藍田や、維新の学生起草に参与した長三洲（ちょうさんしゅう）など、多くの人材を輩出しています。生徒の個性の伸長と社会性の養成を重んじる履修課程や成績評価の方法は広く注目され、〈出題 → 答案提出 → 採点〉という試験法は淡窓に始まったとされています。また当時の学者・文人も多く彼のもとを訪れ、頼山陽（らいさんよう）、梁川星巖（やながわせいがん）、田能村竹田（たのむらちくでん）など、その交遊は多彩なものでした。
