貴族の若者ハーミアとライサンダーは恋仲であるが、ハーミアの父はディミートリアスという若者と彼女を結婚させようとするが、ハーミアは聞き入れない。父は古い法律に則って、領主に娘を死刑にすることを願い出る。領主は4日の猶予をハーミアへ与え、結婚か死刑かを選ばせる。せっぱ詰まった恋人たちは夜に森で会うことにする。ディミートリアスを愛するヘレナも、ハーミアを思うディミートリアスもまた二人の後を追う。かくして、10人の人間が、夏至の夜に妖精の集う森へ出かけていくことになる。
