瘋癲老人日記は、息子の嫁に欲情した不能老人の性を日記形式で綴った作品。
77歳の督助は、息子の妻颯子の足に踏まれたいという倒錯した性を覚える。
督助は颯子に猫目石を買い、その代わりとして颯子の足に頬ずりし、足の型で仏足石を作る。
血圧が上がってしまった督助は入院してしまい、周囲の者の手記としてその最後を記している。
作中人物は谷崎本人、また近縁者がモデルとなっている。毎日芸術賞大賞を受賞した、谷崎晩年の代表作。
谷崎潤一郎
1886年（明治19年）東京日本橋で生まれる。家業が傾き、住み込みで書生となり家庭教師をしながら学業に専念。
1908年に東京帝国大学国文科に入学。1910年大貫晶川、小泉鉄らと第2次『新思潮』を創刊、『誕生』や『刺青』などを発表。1911年授業料未納のため退学。
1915年 石川千代と結婚、1930年離婚。関東大震災後は関西へ移住し『吉野葛』『春琴抄』を発表。
1931年 古川丁未子と結婚、1934年離婚。1935年森田松子と結婚。1959年 右手に麻痺症状が出て、口述筆記にり執筆。1965年79歳で死去。
