腎移植記者による唯一無二のルポルタージュ。
臓器移植とは、重い病気や事故などにより臓器の機能が低下した人に、他者の健康な臓器と取り替えて機能を回復させる医療である。第三者の善意による臓器の提供、そして社会の理解と支援があって成り立つ。
末期腎不全を患った筆者は２０１９年夏、母親からの生体腎移植を受けた。死の淵をも垣間見た壮絶な闘病の日々を克明に綴る。さらに、移植を待つ患者と家族、臓器を提供したドナーの家族、医療関係者ら多くの識者を綿密に取材し、日本でタブー視されることの多かった臓器移植の実態をルポ。
日本では約１万６０００人が臓器移植を待つ一方、脳死下と心停止下を合わせた臓器提供数は年間１００例程度にとどまる。２０２３年には１５０例まで増えたが、まだ低調と言わざるを得ない。臓器提供できる病院が限られるなど体制が整わないことをはじめ、いくつかの理由があるからだ。そのため、待機年数は長期化の一途をたどっている。
待っている間に病状が悪化し、命を落とす人も少なくない。国内で提供が受けられず海外渡航して臓器移植を受ける場合、手術費や入院費、専用機のチャーター費などを合わせると数億円が必要となる。
なぜ日本では臓器提供・移植医療が進まないのか。今後に向けて何が求められるのか。臓器移植に対する理解が深まり、「助かる命を救えない現状」を打破する一助となる渾身の書。
