昭和35年生まれ、三重県松阪市出身。昭和54年3月、二代目桂枝雀に入門し、桂雀司を名乗る。平成7年2月、四代目桂文我を襲名。全国各地で、桂文我独演会・桂文我の会や、親子で落語を楽しむ「おやこ寄席」も開催。
平成25年4月より、相愛大学客員教授に就任し、「上方落語論」を講義。国立演芸場花形演芸大賞、大阪市咲くやこの花賞、NHK新人演芸大賞優秀賞、芸術選奨文部科学大臣賞など、多数の受賞歴あり。

滋賀県出身。
大阪芸術大学大学院修士課程卒業。
1999年、三代目旭堂南陵（無形文化財保持者・2005年死去）に入門。
2003年、大阪舞台芸術新人賞受賞。
2010年、文化庁芸術祭新人賞受賞。
2015年、『映画 講談・難波戦記-真田幸村 紅蓮の猛将-』全国ロードショー。主演作品。
2019年、CD「上方講談シリーズ4 旭堂南湖」発売。「血染の太鼓 広島商業と作新学院」「太閤記より 明智光秀の奮戦」収録。
