それから二十七年の時が過ぎ、昔遊び相手を勤めた者だけが、宗利の前に伺候したが、その中に小次郎の姿は無かった。
彼は八郎兵衛と名乗り、家こそ継いだものの、神童と呼ばれたころの姿は影も形もなく、人が変わったようになってしまい、そして、八月初めに家を出たまま、行方知れずになったのだという。それは宗利が領主として初めて帰国することが発表された時分であった。
宗利は集まった者たちに、八郎兵衛を探すよう命じ、捜索はすぐに始められた。おりしも領民たちが、検地に反対して一揆を企てていた折ではあったが、八郎兵衛は憔悴した姿で見つかった。行方をくらました理由をはぐらかす八郎兵衛であったが、その真意とは……。
