平安時代。

仕えてきた主人に解雇され途方にくれていた下人は、「盗人」になる決意をしきれず、ぼんやり、雨を眺めていた。
羅生門の上に人の気配を感じた下人が門の上を覗き込むと、身寄りのない、打ち捨てられた死体の中に一人、老婆が立っていた。
