大正九年二月二十八日の午後零時半頃のこと。パリに住む元・警視庁捜査一課長の狭山九郎太の家に一人の不思議な青年が訪ねてきた。
「ジョージ・クレイ」と名乗る彼は、一昨年十月の新聞に掲載した狭山の助手の募集広告を手に、助手として雇ってもらいたいのだという。雇ってもらうために有機化学を独学で勉強した彼が、一番興味を持ったのが毒物だということも狭山の関心を引いた。それもわずかしか発行していない狭山の著書「毒物研究」によってというのだ。
身寄りもなく住む家もないジョージは、それまで所属していた「バード・ストーン曲馬団」を逃げだしてきたという。その「バード・ストーン曲馬団」は狭山にとっては自分が警視庁をやめるきっかけとなった事件に関わった存在だったのだ。
ジョージにとっては「曲馬団は自分の両親を苛め殺した敵」なのだという。一度は彼の雇用を躊躇った狭山だったが、彼の話に引き付けられていくのであった……

日本の小説家、SF作家、探偵小説家、幻想文学作家。
1889年（明治22年）1月4日 - 1936年（昭和11年）3月11日。
他の筆名に海若藍平、香倶土三鳥など。現在では、夢久、夢Qなどと呼ばれることもある。福岡県福岡市出身。日本探偵小説三大奇書の一つに数えられる畢生の奇書『ドグラ・マグラ』をはじめ、怪奇色と幻想性の色濃い作風で名高い。またホラー的な作品もある。
