三十歳の会社員である津田由雄は、会社の上司である吉川夫婦の仲人でお延を娶る。まだ結婚して半年程であるが、二人の夫婦仲はどこかぎこちないものであった。かつて津田は、吉川夫人に清子という名の女性を紹介され、二人は恋人となり将来を誓い合った。
しかし清子は、ある日突然津田の前から去り、津田の友人であった関と結婚してしまう。ある日、津田は患っていた痔の手術のため、ようやく金を工面し入院する。津田は退院後、吉川夫人に勧められるまま、流産した清子が静養している湯治場へ足を運ぶのだった……。
