そもそも冷戦後の世界は、リベラルな国際秩序が発展し、また民主主義や法の支配、人権というような普遍主義的な価値が世界に拡大してくことが想定されていた。しかしそのような楽観的な国際秩序観はいまや後退し、世界のそれぞれの地域で、力がものをいう地政学が回帰している。
地政学の視座は、戦後長い期間、日本では忘れられていた。他方で、グローバル化が進み、相互依存が進展した現在における地政学は、一世紀前にイギリスの地理学者マッキンダーが想定していたものとは似て非なるものである。
本書では、それを「新しい地政学」と称して、そのような「新しい地政学」の誕生と、それにともなう国際秩序の変化を、当代気鋭の研究者たちが様々な角度から明らかにしていく。
