ラテン語の名言を通して、リベラルアーツの

源流を学ぶ

本書は、バチカン裁判所の弁護士、

ハン・ドンイル氏が西江大学で行った名講義を

整理したものだ。彼の講義は、単なる語学の授業

というよりは、総合人文科学の授業に近い。

西洋文明の根源ともいえるラテン語を通して、

歴史、哲学、宗教、文化、経済など多くのこと

を学べる。

彼の授業を聞いた学生らは「本当の自分に

出会うことができた」「世界を見る視野が

広くなった」「思考がより深くなった」と

絶賛し、さらにこの授業が人生の転換点

になったという人もいる。講義の初日の

学生は24人だったが、名講義だとウワサが

広がり、周辺の大学の学生や一般の聴講生まで

集まっていった。

ラテン語は現在使われていない言語で、

文法も非常に難しい。なぜこの講義が人気

を集めたかというと、ラテン語の学習のほかに、

著者が長期のイタリア留学で体験したことを

言葉に乗せて話した内容が、まさに人生に

ついての学びが凝縮されたものだったからだ。
