大人になってから会う閏土の態度に、封建社会の格差の壁を改めて痛感することになる。
しかし、甥の宏児（ホンル）から閏土の息子・水生（シュイション）と再び会う約束をした話を聞き、
次の世代に僅かながらの希望を感じるのであった。
当時の格差の大きい社会に生きる中国民衆へ魯迅がメッセージを込めて書いた作品。

中国の小説家、翻訳家、思想家。本名は周 樹人（しゅう じゅじん）
浙江省紹興府の士大夫の家系に生まれ、中国で最も早く西洋の技法を用いて小説を書いた作家であり、
その作品は、中国だけでなく、東アジアでも広く愛読されている。
日本でも中学校用のすべての国語教科書に彼の作品が収録されている。
代表作に「阿Q正伝」「狂人日記」「故郷」「藤野先生」などがある。
