話はその時の続きに至る。そうこうしているうつに隣の一等車から興奮した人々がどやどやとやって来た。その一人である車掌はBに向かって「ちょっと君、失敬ですが」と切り出した。Bはある貴婦人の指輪を掏ったと疑われていたのだった。Aは全く動じず潔白を主張するBの態度をなかなかのものだと思っていた。
互いに腹の読み合いのような会話を交わす中、Bは口調を変えてこう言った。
「オイ、いい加減にしらばくれっこは止そうじゃねえか」
その言葉にAもフンと鼻で笑う。そして二人はその指輪の行方について話し出すのだが……
