十兵衛の造った見事な模型に感服した上人は、それだけの腕をもちながらの今の境遇に同情する。
本来ならばこの普請は感応寺の御用を務める源田が請け負うところで、源田は名人と名高く棟梁としても人望の厚い男だったが、上人は二人を呼びこの仕事をどちらが請け負うか話しあうように言う。
源田は二人で建てようと十兵衛に提案するが、十兵衛はその申し出を断るのだった。
