柳田国男編『全国昔話記録』の一冊として刊行されたこの昔話集は、上閉伊郡、今日の遠野市で採集されました。この上閉伊郡昔話集はことに東北が色濃くでています。

各お話は上閉伊郡遠野地方の旧土淵村や旧遠野町等の人々から採話され、「猿の経立」や「かちかち山」に出てくるホラマエという土間を指す言葉、「兎モライ」「狸モライ」という言葉など、現地での生きた言語語りは方言の資料としてもとても貴重とされています。

方言に聞き慣れない人にとってはとっつきにくい部分もありますが、その土地のことばを忠実に再現したものはなかなか無く、それこそが魅力となっています。

柳田国男（やなぎだ・くにお）
1875年、兵庫県生まれ。東京帝国大学卒業後、農商務省に勤務。
貴族院書記官長を経て、朝日新聞社客員となる。1935年、「民間伝承の会(のち日本民俗学会)」を創始し、日本民俗学を確立する。1951年、文化勲章受賞。
1962年没。主な著書に『遠野物語』『海上の道』『妖怪談義』『桃太郎の誕生』『木綿以前の事』他多数。
