カナさんは茨城県在住の三十代の会社員の女性。
結婚し幸せにお暮らしだが、家事があまり得意ではなく、こと洗濯などは週末にまとめて行い、乾燥は近所のコインランドリーの大型乾燥機を利用するのが専らだった。
その日は用事があったので早朝に起きて洗濯し、午前7時に車に洗い立ての洗濯物を積んで出かけてそうだ。用事のある先の近くのコインランドリーで乾燥まで終わらせてからその足で予定している用事を済まそうと考えていた。
かくして、到着したのはチェーン展開のクリーニング店併設のコインランドリー……。人気のない店内で洗濯物をたたんでいると小柄な老婆が「家がね全焼しちゃって」と話しかけてきた。
