モーリス・ルヴェルはフランスの作家。「フランスのポー」と言われ、恐怖や悲哀を主題とした残酷物語の短編を多く残しています。
日本においても新青年等に翻訳紹介され、探偵小説の読者を熱狂させたほか、江戸川乱歩、夢野久作、小酒井不木などに絶賛されました。
乱歩は「淋しさ、悲しさ、怖さがルヴェルの短編の随所に漂っている」と言い、久作は「探偵小説で一番好きなのはルヴェルとポーだ」と言っています。
