全国を回り旅芝居を続ける傍流歌舞伎一座「花房座」。座頭の長女である百多は亡き母に代わり裏方の仕事を一手に担い花房座を陰から支えていた。
百多の頑張りもあり、一座の評判は上々。ついに東京の大きな芝居小屋での興行が決まった。
しかしそんな中、人気の若女形である弟の千多が失踪してしまう。千多なしで次の興行は成り立たない。急遽、百多が弟に化け舞台に立つことになるが、運悪く衣裳屋の職人・暁に正体が露見してしまい――。
