確かに、供給の混乱もあるにはあった。たとえば、COVID-19によるマレーシアのロックダウンで、現地の半導体パッケージング業務に支障が生じたのは事実だ。しかし、調査会社のICインサイツによると、2021年の世界全体の半導体デバイスの生産量は、1.1兆個以上と過去最高だった。2020年比で13％増だ。
つまり、半導体不足は、供給の問題というより、主に需要の増加の問題だったのである。半導体の需要を突き上げていたのは、新型のPC、5Gの携帯電話、AI対応のデータ・センター、そして突き詰めれば、計算能力を求める私たちの飽くなき欲求だった。
こうして、世界中の政治家たちが、半導体サプライ・チェーンのジレンマを見誤った。
