それから十日ののち、犯人を捕らえることができないまま新たな被害者が出てしまう。佐藤寅雄が殺されてしまったのだ。それも庄司巡査部長がいる現場で――
しかし今度は犯人の靴跡が残っていた。警察はすぐさま逮捕に乗り出したのだが、またしても兇器は見つからず容疑者は頑強に否認している。
庄司巡査部長は再び明智のもとを訪れた…
