小説を書きあぐねている作家「私」の住むアパートに、旧知の室谷信夫が駆け込んでくる。室谷は私に抱き着くや、泣きじゃくるばかり。「いい加減にしろや」と突き飛ばすと、目を剥いて痙攣し、眠ってしまった。いったい何があったのか？ 目を覚ました室谷が言うには――同じ会社に勤める半井寂美と交際し、将来を言い交わしていたが、４週間ほど前から様子がおかしくなった。連絡はつかず、会社で会っても目をそらす。社内の噂では、やはり同僚の男・新田と結婚が間近いという。奸智に長けた新田は仕事上でも、室谷を軽んじるばかりか罠に陥れて栄進し、室谷は無能呼ばわりされるに至った。憤懣やるかたない室谷は、新田を「滅ぼす」、それが「正義」だと言い張る。日中戦争のさなか、発禁処分を受けた石川淳の短編「マルスの歌」へのオマージュだろう。ウイルスが猛威を振るう令和二年、やがて踊り出す群衆を町田は幻視している。「優しさ」ってなんだ？
