一方、鴇川家にも複雑な事情があった。行平には前妻との間に長男・匠太郎と後妻との間に次男・範次郎がいる。だが二人には過去に女性をめぐる事件があり、今もいがみ合う仲。さらに前妻の父は島民が帰依する神社の宮司、後妻の父は主要産業を統べる漁業組合長である。
そんななか、宮司は孫の匠太郎に職を継ぐべく儀式を行う。深夜まで祝詞を上げる声が途切れたと思いきや、密室となった祈祷所で死んでいる匠太郎が発見された。ジンさんは言う。「家族間の争いは醜ければ醜いほど、派手なら派手なほど面白い。ああ、わくわくするなあ」戸惑いながらも六兵は調査を進めるが、第二の殺人事件が起きて――。
