芥川龍之介は万太郎の俳句を「「嘆かひ」の発句」と喝破した。万太郎は「俳句は余技」とした。その無防備を装って詠み上げられた余技は、日本語での詠嘆の美しさ、表現の自在さにおいて、他の俳句の追随を許さない。国民に広く愛唱されてきた。明治末年より亡くなる昭和38年までの半世紀間の全句8000句から900句を精選した。
