 1934年上海。「魔都」と呼ばれるほど繁栄と悪徳を誇るこの地に成功を夢見て渡ってきた日本人の青年・吾郷次郎。
租界で商売をする彼のもとへ、原田ユキヱという謎めいた女から極上の阿片と芥子の種が持ち込まれる。
次郎は上海の裏社会を支配する青幇の一員・楊直に渡りをつけるが、これをきっかけに、阿片ビジネスへ引き摺り込まれてしまう。
やがて、上海では第二次上海事変が勃発。関東軍と青幇との間で、阿片をめぐって暗闘が繰り広げられる。
満州から新品種を持ち出されたことを嗅ぎつけた関東軍は、盗まれた阿片と芥子の種の行方を執拗に追う。
一方、次郎と楊直はビルマの山中で阿片芥子の栽培をスタートさせ、インドシナ半島とその周辺でのモルヒネとヘロインの流通を目論む。
軍靴の響き絶えない大陸において、阿片売買による莫大な富と帝国の栄耀に群がり、
