発明者はなんと当時１５歳の全盲の少年。
その名はルイ・ブライユといいます。
彼は５歳の時に全盲となるも、当時としては珍しく盲学校で教育を受けます。在学中に点字を発明し、その後もより使いやすいものにするために改良を続けて、世界中の目の見えない人々に希望の光を与えたのです。
しかし、ルイ・ブライユの発明は当初から周囲に受け入れられたものではなく、正式に彼の点字が認められたのは、彼が亡くなった後のことでした。
現在はフランスの偉人たちが眠るパンテオンに埋葬されるなど、世界中の人からその功績がたたえられているブライユ。
