 「差別はいけない」「弱者・少数者は社会によって守られるべきだ」「多様性を尊重しよう」……どれも正しく、当然のことだ。異論を言う人はまずいない。倫理的にも政治的にも正しいと言えるだろう。だが、一部にはポリティカル・コレクトネス（政治的正しさ＝ポリコレ）を、恣意的に拡大解釈し、利用しようとする動きがある。「多様性を認めよ」と言いながら、自分が考える以外の一切の異論は認めず、モンスター的に追い詰める。ポリコレ先進国・アメリカでは、「キャンセルカルチャー」と称してかつての大統領の銅像を引き倒したり、「差別されてきた弱者だから、放火・暴行や略奪も許される」と主張する犯罪行為さえ激増。また、性的少数者をめぐるトラブルや、新しい差別も増加している。一方、日本では「お母さん食堂」が批判され、「肌色の色鉛筆」は消え去った。子どもたちは学校で「あだ名」をつけることも許されず、一部の伝統行事や文化も、過剰なポリコレにより消滅しかねない。少数者の権利を認め共生しようとするのでなく、少数者のためという名目で多数者を迫害しようとすることは、「機会の平等」でなく、「結果の平等」のみを求めること。そして、誰も幸せにならない「新たな不平等社会」を創造するだけなのではないのか。
多くのノンフィクション作品で高い評価を受けてきた著者が、忠実で丹念な取材力を基本に、過剰な「ポリコレ」の正体を明かし、警鐘を鳴らす。
