毎年8月15日の終戦記念日を迎える度に、閣僚による靖国神社参拝が取り沙汰される。問題は靖国にA級戦犯が合祀されていることだ。では、A級戦犯とは何か。彼らはどんな罪を犯したのか。第二次世界大戦終結後、このA級戦犯を裁くために開かれたのが極東国際軍事裁判（東京裁判）である。この時、11人の判事の中で唯一人、「被告人全員無罪」を主張したのが、インド代表判事のパール博士だった。博士は東京裁判を「勝者が、敗者だけを裁く急ごしらえの法律をつくり、これを過去に遡って適用した違法裁判である」と断じたのである。パール判決はその後、世界中で評価され、マッカーサーも「あの裁判は間違いだった」と認めている。ただ日本人だけが、今も自虐史観の中にいる。あれだけの被害と不幸をもたらした戦争が正しかったわけはない。しかし、何もかもが間違っていたという破れかぶれな反省からは、未来への正しい選択は導き出せない。終戦からすでに70余年。日本人はあの戦争をどうとらえ、国際社会でどう生きていくべきなのか。
