天皇家にもつながるという名門で、花嫁修業中のお手伝いさんがいるような裕福な家庭に生まれ、慶応幼稚舎から慶応大学に進み、電通、日本航空という当時の超一流企業にコネで就職。誰もがうらやむエリートコースを進んだ2人が、なぜ、そろいもそろって塀の向こう側に落ちてしまったのか。

稀有な兄弟の人生を、抜群の取材力でたどった本書は、戦争ですべてを失った日本が、奇跡の復興によって立ち直ったものの、やがて傲慢になり、バブルの狂乱を生み出して破綻していった「昭和」という時代を見事に描き出した。

現在、裁判中の治之のインタビューに成功し、直接、疑問をぶつけ、肉声による反論を載せているのは、まさに王道ノンフィクションの醍醐味である。
