機械の精神を蝕む病、AIMD。
その奇病を専門とする医工師を求め、テスタたちは冬のチベットを訪れていた。
有限の命を自覚し、改めてハルの母親として、娘に向き合う決意をしたテスタ。
だが、ハルが一人前の大人になるには知識も道徳も不十分であり、友だちになると約束したイリナとの関係も、いまだにこれといった進展は見られない。
それでもハルの中には着実に人間社会に対する好奇心が芽生えているようで、「イリナができるのに、あたしができないのはいやだ」と、自ら勉学を教えてほしいと志願してくる。
普通の人生を歩めなかった娘のために、テスタはハルの勉学に喜んで付き合い、さらには一種の社会見学になればという想いから、旅先の難民街でチベットの廃校を訪れる。
しかし、テスタはそこで奇妙な手紙を見つける。
『贖えない罪を犯してなお、この世界に生きる意味はあるのだろうか』
遺書ともとれるその一文とともに綴られていたのは、手紙を書いた者が、十一年前の人類消失を予見していたという事実だった。
