1994年5月、大阪市東淀川区に住む大屋隆司の父親・横山道雄が突然、失踪した。この失踪騒ぎの後、みるみる衰弱していく父を看病する中で、隆司はこれまで知らなかった父の過去を知る。
父の戸籍上の名前は「大田正一」といい、死亡により除籍されていた。
大田正一といえば太平洋戦争末期に「人間爆弾」と呼ばれた特攻兵器「桜花」を発案したとされる人物である。大田は終戦の三日後に遺書を残し、茨城県神之池基地を零戦で飛び立ち、そのまま帰ってこなかった。
ところが、大田は生きていた。「茨城で牧場をやっている」「新橋の闇市に連れて行った」「青森で会った」「密輸物資をソ連に運んでいる」……断片的な目撃談や噂はあったものの、その足取りは判然としなかった。
1950年、大阪に「横山道雄」となって現れた大田は、結婚した女性との間に三人の子供をつくり、幸せな家庭を築き、94年にその生涯を終えた。
それから20年後の2014年、大田の遺族を名乗る女性からの電話に興味を持った著者は、大田の謎多き人生について調査を始める。それは隆司ら家族にとっても父を知るための貴重な時間となっていく。
「本当の父親」を探す旅の結末は――。
