波乱万丈の人生を送り、カルト・ヒーローとさえ言われたアメリカの作家。1935年、コロラド州生まれ。
1962年に刊行した『カッコーの巣の上で』がたちまちベストセラーとなる。
その後、カリフォルニア州に、ヒッピーの若者たちのためのコミューンを開設。
1964年には、ヒッピーコミューン「メリー・プランクスターズ」とともに、サイケデリック塗装のバス「FURTHUR号」に乗り込み、全米に「トリップ」体験を広めるツアーをはじめる。
1967年のビートルズの映画『マジカル・ミステリー・ツアー』はこのツアーをモチーフとしたとされる。こうした出来事を通じ、キージーは反体制のヒーローとしてもてはやされた。
その後、薬物使用などで逮捕・起訴を繰り返し、次第に脚光を浴びる存在でなくなったキージーは、後半生は農場を経営しながら、エッセイや短編を書いて自由に暮らし た。2001年死去。

1930年、大分県生まれ。東京教育大学卒業。筑波大学名誉教授、麗澤大学名誉教授。
