宇都宮のろう学校に通う高校1年生の咲季。重度の難聴である咲季は、他者とのコミュニケーションを避けがちだ。ある日行われた交流会で、聴者だが手話を使いこなす女子高生に出会う。しかし彼女が発したある言葉に、咲季はショックを受ける。落ち込んだままの帰り道、見つけたのは「おひとりさま専用」と書かれたカフェ。店に入った咲季を迎えたのは百人一首の歌を冠したパフェメニューだった。
競技かるたの読手でもあるカフェのオーナー・陽子に誘われるまま競技かるたを体験した咲季は、持ち前の負けん気と抜群の記憶力を発揮。そこに現れたのは交流会で出合った女子高生、カナだった。なぜか咲季に対抗心を燃やすカナも競技かるたに挑み、やがて二人はライバルに。
咲季が大会で戦うためには、読手が読む句を手話通訳してもらう必要がある。ろう学校の担任で手話通訳士の資格も持つ映美の通訳は、正確でタイミングも完璧。しかし映美は初めての大会直後、通訳を降りると言い出した。それにはある過去が起因していて……。
